Acne & Blackhead Removal
Acne, the most common skin condition, affects as much as 85 percent of teenagers, according to American Academy of Dermatology. Adults, especially pregnant and menstruating women, can suffer from acne as well. The condition causes the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, pustules, nodules and cysts on the face, chest, back and shoulders.
Acne blemishes remain on the skin anywhere from a few days up to a week and sometimes longer, depending on the person and the severity of the condition. Many find the red blotches, white pustules and blackheads associated with acne unsightly. Since most acne medications focus on preventing future breakouts rather than removing current blemishes, acne sufferers turn to acne and blackhead removal to help shrink, minimize and heal their breakouts faster.
Dermatologists and cosmetologists extract pimples and blackheads using a metal extractor that resembles a small dome on the end of a narrow handle. At the center of the dome is a small hole, which is placed over the blemish. The rim of the dome applies even pressure around the blemish, forcing the bacteria, puss and dead skin cells within the blemish to the surface of the skin.
Most medications focus on preventing future breakouts. Over-the-counter medications containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and lactic acid kill bacteria and exfoliate dead surface skin cells. Prescription medications include tretinoin, tazarotene and various retinoid creams. In some cases, antibiotic creams and oral antibiotics are used to prevent infection and soothe inflamed skin, according to MayoClinic.com.
Scrubs and Peels
Exfoliating scrubs contain small pearls and granules that softly scrub the skin and help remove blackhead plugs and the dead skin that traps bacteria and oil in the skin, which results in blemishes. Peels and blackhead removal strips attach to blackhead plugs and pull them free from the skin when you remove the peel or strip.
Although it is tempting, you should never try to squeeze, pick or extract blackheads and other acne blemishes manually without the help of a trained professional. Squeezing causes uneven pressure around the blemish, which pushes the bacteria, oil and puss even further into the skin. Secondary complications associated with popping pimples include skin infection and deep, painful cysts.
