Acne is a treatable ailment, which affects nearly 40% of teenagers during their adolescence. Mild types of acne can be treated easily with the use of several over the counter medications but for severe types you may need to take antibiotics after consulting a dermatologist.

The advantage of using Antibiotics is that they eliminate the root cause of acne by killing contributing bacteria. It eliminates inflammation by clearing all acne spots from the skin, which reduces irritation and swelling produced by white blood cells. It is suggested to use benzoyl peroxide along with the antibiotics for unplugging blocked pores such as blackheads and whiteheads as these are mild forms of acne and are better treated with topical products. It is recommended to take precautions in order to stay away from adverse side effects while using antibiotics.

The most common type of anti-biotic used for treating acne is Tetracycline based antibiotics, which includes oxytetracycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, lymecycline and minocycline. These types of antibiotics should be avoided by children under 12 years of age as well as by pregnant and breastfeeding women. Other less commonly used antibiotics include erythromycin and trimethoprim, which are usually taken when any of the above mentioned tablets does not, suits your body. Almost All antibiotics can cause candida vaginal yeast infections in women and reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills.

It depends on the body and type of acne but usually it takes up to four weeks before any noticeable improvement is observed on the skin. In some cases it takes up to four months or even longer for achieving maximum response. Once you have completed your anti-biotic program it is a good idea to follow a maintenance treatment to stop acne from returning back. For that it is advised to switch to benzoyl peroxide or a topical retinoid.
