Acne and Skin Problems Acne and Skin Problems

Acne and skin breakouts occur when the pores become impacted with sebum, bacteria, dirt and oils. Acne can happen on any type of skin, from dry skin to oil skin. These skin breakouts can appear in many different forms, each of which require a specific acne-fighting treatment in order to eliminate the breakouts quickly.

Blackheads

Blackheads are caused when sebum and oils become clogged inside the pores, effectively becoming trapped inside. The opening of the pore remains open, exposing the trapped oils and sebum to oxygen. This oxidizes the oils and sebum causing them to turn brown, which appears black to the naked eye. Because blackheads do not come to a head, it can be difficult to treat them with typical acne-fighting products that only kill off acne-causing bacteria. In order to flush out the blackheads, a noncomedogenic oil can be applied, such as castor oil, then wiped away with a steaming hot washcloth. The castor oil bonds to the trapped oils and sebum, and the steaming washcloth opens the pores to release the entrapment.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are characterized by the appearance of pink to red bumps covering an area of skin--each bump containing a white, puss-filled center. The puss is caused by the oils and sebum that are trapped inside the pores becoming infected by bacteria. Whiteheads can be inflamed and irritated and can cause the skin to become more sensitive than normal. Over-the-counter acne treatment products are usually effective in clearing whiteheads. The most common and effective products include benzoyl peroxide creams, salicylic acid gels and tea tree oil.

Cysts and Nodules

Cysts and nodules are the most severe forms of acne and can cause the skin to erupt in large, firm lumps that do not come to a head. Cysts and nodules are often swollen, fluid-filled and irritated, and the pressure can often cause people to try to pop them. Unfortunately, popping cysts and nodules often leads to facial scarring and infection. Cysts and nodules cause the skin to become extremely inflamed and irritated, often leaving the skin disfigured and unsightly. Cysts and nodules can sometimes be resistant to over-the-counter acne products but respond better to higher-strength treatments that are available by prescription from a licensed dermatologist or medical doctor. These treatments include retinoid creams, laser treatments and pharmaceutical medications. These treatments usually cause more severe side effects, such as peeling, redness and burning on the skin, and should be monitored throughout use.
