 What is hyper pigmentation?

Hyper pigmentation is a discoloration of skin. It appears in different colors like pink or red, purple, brown or black depending on person's skin tone or depth of discoloration. People mix it up with scars although scars are different from hyper pigmentation.

Hyper pigmentation is most common in dark skin people but it does not mean that fair skin people do not suffer with it.

Melanocyte are cells responsible for pigmentation. They are located at lower level of epidermis and produce a complex color substance called melanin. This substance travels to upper layer of epidermis and gives color to skin. Darker people posses greater amount of melanin, and lighter skin people posses less amount of melanin. Hyper pigmentation is caused by excess of melanin that is why dark skin people can get hyper pigmentation very easily.
