Acne, the most common skin disorder, affects 85 percent of American teenagers and appears with increasing frequency in adults, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The unsightly red and white blemishes occur when pores become blocked by excess oil secretions. While mild cases of acne often react well when treated by natural alternatives, these remedies do not have the stamp of approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and are best utilized in conjunction with conventional methods of acne treatment.

Diet

As the American Academy of Dermatology states, "Acne is not caused by specific foods, but certain foods may make some people's acne worse." Acne sufferers should follow a healthy diet of simple, unprocessed foods, and refrain from eating vegetable and animal fats. Junk food, such as colas, candies, chips and fast foods, often present problems, especially if you are already prone to outbreaks. Stick to raw, dark green or orange vegetables, as these contain beta-carotene, which helps to support and rejuvenate the skin. Eat one to three servings of fruit a day, and drink a glass of water every two waking hours to flush impurities from the skin, as advised by Dr. Deepak Chopra, author of "Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide."

In addition, reducing simple carbohydrates in your diet can decrease inflammation associated with acne. Sugar encourages oil production, so stay away from sweets. Instead, eat plenty of nuts and seeds, such as walnuts and pumpkin seeds, which are rich in skin-healthy vitamin E.

Detoxification

Detoxification aids in cleansing the body of acne-causing impurities. While some acne sufferers may find blemishes increase immediately following the start of detoxification therapy, that is due to the body's faster rate of expulsion of toxins. Once the toxins are eliminated, your acne may decrease dramatically, according to Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Natural Cures."

Balch recommends a three-day vegetable juice fast to banish toxic buildup. He suggests apple, carrot, wheat grass and barley grass juices. You can also try a one-day fast, concentrating on fresh vegetable juices and filtered water with lemon. Couple the fast with dry brushing of your face to remove dead skin cells and support circulation. Do not brush pus-filled pimples and refrain from fasting if you are hypoglycemic.

Zinc

Although it may take up to three months to yield benefits, zinc warrants a try as an acne alternative. Zinc works to accelerate skin healing. According to a study conducted in 1977, oral zinc sulfate therapy significantly reduces acne papules and pustules, reports the Archives of Dermatology.

After consulting with a physician, take 50 mg of zinc, in conjunction with 5 mg of copper, twice daily with meals for three months. After three months reduce zinc supplementation to 50 mg once a day. Reduce the dosage by 20 mg if nausea occurs.
