About Skin Irritation
Are there red, itchy areas, bumps or painful patches on your skin? Any skin that is bumpy, itchy, painful, scaly or swollen means that you have skin irritation. This could occur because of an allergy, dry skin or some other type of skin condition. Although there are a number of different causes, types and treatments for irritated skin, you can usually get to the bottom of what is plaguing your skin and get it under control.
Dermatitis is the name for skin inflammation. There are a number of different types, but typically appears as red, itchy and irritated skin. Dermatitis can also make the skin swell, and may be caused by an allergy, greasy skin or changes in the weather.
A breakout of bumps or a rash, swollen skin, or skin that is red or scaly can all be caused by an allergic reaction. Hives, those itchy red welts that break out on the skin, are often an indication of an allergic reaction. Other signs include swelling on the face or mouth. You could have used a new product with a chemical that is irritating your skin, or even touched a substance that is irritating--like latex, for instance.
Eczema is a type of dermatitis that causes swollen, itchy, dry and red patches of skin. Eczema can be triggered by allergies, a family history, contact with an irritant, stress and weather changes. Flare-ups of eczema can be managed but there is no cure for the skin disease.
Psoriasis is another skin condition that is actually an autoimmune disease. It can appear on the skin anywhere on the body and is often linked to other chronic health conditions like heart disease, depression and diabetes. There are several different types of psoriasis, and each has different systems. In general, psoriasis causes inflamed, itchy skin and patches of flaky red, raised skin.
Treatment and Prevention
If you have a skin irritation, you should see your doctor to find out what is causing the condition and the best way to treat it. Skin irritation can be managed with various topical treatments and medications, but you'll need to stay on top of flare-ups. Try to prevent skin irritation by keeping the skin moisturized and limiting exposure to irritants.
