About Proactiv Solution Refining Mask
Acne is caused by hormones, substances in the skin's oil glands and hair follicles, or any combination of these factors, according to the National Institutes of Health, or NIH. The clogged pores and outbreaks of blemishes can occur on the chest, back or neck, but they are most often the most bothersome on the face. Acne can lead to permanent scars if not treated correctly. Proactiv is an acne treatment system developed by dermatologists to treat acne.
The 3-step Proactiv Solution system, as explained on its website, is meant to stop the acne cycle before the blemish ever breaks through the skin. The three products within the system--Renewing Cleanser, Revitalizing Toner and Repairing Treatment--are produced with acne-fighting medications and botanicals. Once you are on the 3-step program, you can also purchase additional Proactiv products, like the Refining Mask.
The Proactiv Solution Refining Mask comes in a tube. In order to use it, squeeze the tube until the product is on your fingertips. Apply it to a clean face. Let the mask dry for 10 to 15 minutes. You will feel a tightening of the skin. This is perfectly normal and is an indication that the product is working. Once the mask has dried, rinse it off with water. Reapply the mask three or more times per week as desired.
The active ingredient in the Refining Mask from Proactiv is sulfur 6.0%. NIH acknowledges that sulfur helps to break down whiteheads and blackheads. The organization also notes that sulfur-containing acne products can reduce the production of oil and slow down the growth of the bacteria that causes acne. Sulfur could also be helpful in alleviating the inflammation of blemishes, making them less noticeable while they are being treated.
In addition to the sulfur, the Proactiv Solution Refining Mask contains kaolin, linoleic acid, glycereth-26, magnesium aluminum silicate, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, zinc oxide, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, geranium maculatum extract, cymbopogon schoenanthus extract, tocopherol, tocopheryl acetate, melaleuca alternifolia, or tea tree, leaf oil, hydrated silica, butylene glycol, ethylparaben, ethoxydiglycol, methylparaben and titanium dioxide, or CI 77891. There is also water and fragrance in the mask.
The Proactiv company warns that their Refining Mask should be used with caution in conjunction with other acne medications that are topical. Using too many products at once can cause excess irritation or dryness of the skin. If skin problems do occur, consult a doctor. This product should not be used on the mouth, lips or eyes. If it is accidentally ingested, call the Poison Control Center immediately. The Proactiv Refining Mask may also make you sun-sensitive, so use a sunscreen when going outside.
