About Oily Skin Problems
When summer comes and the weather heats up, many women and men can feel like they have an oil slick across their face. Constant face blotting, acne and makeup that slides off right after it's put on can be frustrating results of oily skin. There's no magic solution, but once you understand your skin, there are things you can do to improve it.
Oily skin is caused by overproduction of sebum in the subcutaneous layer of the skin, and it is normally the result of one or a combination of a number of things--age, diet, stress, pregnancy, hormone levels, heredity, humidity, cosmetics and birth control pills. Oily skin is common in adolescents because of the hormonal changes that accompany puberty. Women also experience hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause, or when they are taking birth control pills. Men can experience hormonal changes as well, which may lead to oily skin. Certain prescription medicines can also cause oily skin. Oily skin may be aggravated by eating oily foods or foods high in sodium, and hot or humid weather can be a big factor in the oiliness of the skin.
The most obvious negative effect of oily skin is that it is unattractive. In the magazines, models always have a perfectly matte complexion, but that is not the case in real life. For some people, the negative effects of oily skin stop there; for others, oily skin can lead to acne that is sometimes severe. Because oily skin is caused by excess sebum, sometimes the sebum clogs pores in the skin and traps dirt and bacteria, which leads to acne. People with oily skin may find keeping their skin clean difficult, and wearing makeup is sometimes not possible because the oiliness of the skin just makes makeup smear and wipe off.
The best benefit of oily skin is that it tends to age more slowly. Because one of the effects of aging is that the skin produces less sebum, a person with oily skin continues to produce sebum at a normal rate well into old age. Sebum moisturizes and regulates the skin, meaning that the skin stays supple and elastic longer than in those who have dry or normal skin.
Oily Skin Care
People with oily skin need to take special care of their skin. You should avoid products with added oil . Choose products that are oil-free and non-comedogenic, meaning they won't block the pores. Although the inclination might be to wash the face many times with harsh soap and apply drying products to the skin, people with oily skin should treat their skin gently and not apply anything too drying. Over-drying the skin will cause it to produce more sebum than normal, and will lead to even more oily skin. Limit washing the face to two or three times per day. Follow with a gentle astringent to clean and shrink the pores and apply a light moisturizer. A mud or clay mask can also be applied to absorb excess oil from the skin.
Diet for Oily Skin
Those who have oily skin should be careful to avoid too much oil or fat in their diet as this can create excess sebum. Avoid sugar, salt, alcohol and caffeine, because they can aggravate oily skin. Leafy green vegetables, fruits and lots of water are recommended for oily skin because they supply vital nutrients and help flush toxins from the skin that may be responsible for producing excess sebum.
