About Dermatological Skin Care
Overview
The skin is the largest organ in your body and needs just as much looking after as the rest of your body. The skin on your face is sensitive but is often exposed to strong sunlight, pollution and dirt. Add genetic factors and the stresses of modern life into the mix and it is not hard to see why so many people suffer problems with their skin.
Acne
Tempting as it may be to pick and squeeze acne, Skin Care Guide warns that you should only do so with clean hands, and only when the acne is fully mature--that is, just before it bursts. Wipe with a tissue and prevent the pus from coming into contact with the rest of your skin, as this will spread the problem. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a gentle cleanser every day, followed by an acne product, which you should allow up to three months to work.
Rosacea
Rosacea is characterized by blotchy red skin, sore eyes and facial swelling, and although there is no cure, a thorough skin care regime can moderate its intensity. The AAD suggests you use lukewarm water to wash your face and cleanse gently using your fingertips rather than a sponge or cloth, which could irritate your skin. Use mild, fragrance-free products and pat-dry the skin with a soft towel. By keeping a food diary you could find a way to eliminate foods that irritate your skin.
Eczema
Eczema is characterized by patches of skin that become sore and itchy, sometimes leading to pain, and it can be hard to determine what caused it or how to treat it. You could try keeping a food diary to determine allergy causes but according to the Mayo Clinic, a medical approach may be more helpful. A health professional can prescribe corticosteroid creams or tablets, antibiotics or antihistamines or he can suggest light therapy. Light therapy is the process by which the skin is exposed to either natural sunlight or UV rays, but despite its benefits it could increase the risks of premature aging and skin damage.
Aging
By exposing your skin to the sun you hasten the cessation of elastin and collagen but by wearing a high factor sun cream, or protecting your skin with clothing you will avoid this problem. Smoking, too, causes the skin to stretch repeatedly, leading to wrinkles around the mouth. The AAD suggests you use a daily moisturizer each morning and evening, wear sunscreen every day, avoid smoking and consume a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains to improve the health of your skin.
General Skin Care
Skin Care Guide suggests you cleanse your skin regularly no matter what skin type you have. Determine which product to use by whether you have oily, dry or combination skin and seek advice from a dermatologist if you are not sure. Avoid touching your face throughout the day and take care of your body and health generally as this will show in your skin.
