About Acne Medications
Overview
Acne medications come in various forms, such as topical creams and gels, oral medications, washes, spot treatments and masks. Finding the right course of action may be difficult, though you can narrow your search with help from a dermatologist, pharmacist or other medical professional.
Types
Many over-the-counter treatments contain the same ingredients used in prescription medications in smaller doses. The most effective over-the-counter medications include benzoyl peroxide, which has been used for decades, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Benefits
Topical creams, such as those containing benzoyl peroxide, work to kill bacteria that clogs pores. However, these lotions and creams may be bothersome for some individuals, causing redness, peeling and even allergic reactions. Some individuals may fare better with oral medications, which work internally to clear skin.
Considerations
Side effects should be considered before beginning treatments with acne medications. Some oral medications, such as isotretinoin, are linked to severe side effects.
Prevention/Solution
Oral contraceptives are often used among women to prevent acne by decreasing oil production. These medications can be used for long-term therapy.
Misconceptions
Many individuals believe acne is caused by poor hygiene or dietary choices. However, acne is generally caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which are most fierce in teen years when hormones are raging. Continuing to use acne medications, even when skin is clear, will help keep oil from clogging pores.
