A Quick Homemade Acne Remedy
Acne can be slightly annoying or intensely embarrassing. An average teen can have two or three pimples on her face and still attend the prom with confidence, while another, who has hundreds she cannot hide, has anxiety even leaving her house. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne vulgaris affects 40 million to 50 million people, predominantly teenagers and young adults. Acne is caused by a mixture of excess oil and dead skin cells, clogging fine hair follicles. Bacteria is introduced, creating redness, inflammation and closed pustules.
Acne is not caused by chocolate, junk food or poor hygiene, reports physician-monitored Healthcommunities.com. Triggers can be genetics, menstruation, teen (androgen) hormones or stress. Acne is not curable, but it is controllable. Remedies can be quick, natural and homemade from ingredients found in your kitchen.
Cut a Granny Smith apple in half and discard the peel, the core and seeds. Grate the flesh of the apple (or dice very fine) and place in a small mixing bowl. Pat the apple lightly with a paper towel to remove excess juice.
Pour 4 tbsp. of pure honey into the bowl with the apple. Make sure the honey is somewhat cool; even slightly warm honey will be too runny. Mix with a spoon until thoroughly blended.
Wash your hands well with soap and water and then use clean fingertips or a clean, soft brush to spread the honey mixture onto your face. Avoid the eye area. Protect your hair and the surface you lie on in case the honey runs slightly. In a soothing environment, lie down and relax for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat skin dry. Apply the mask once or twice per week, followed three days later by the egg and lemon revitalizing skin application, described in the next steps.
Separate two egg whites into a small bowl and whisk until frothy. Add 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice and whisk for 30 seconds. Lemon juice may be adjusted to 1 tsp. for combination dry/oily skin or increased to 3 tsp. for very oily skin.
Apply egg and lemon mixture generously to your face with cotton balls, avoiding the eye area. Recline comfortably and relax for 15 to 20 minutes while the liquid dries. Rinse it off with lukewarm water, followed by a cool water rinse. Pat your skin dry.
