5 Things You Need to Know About Whiteheads

1. Acne Is More Common During Adolescence

Acne is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit. The pilosebaceous unit includes a hair follicle, sebaceous gland and a hair. The sebaceous gland makes sebum, used to keep the hair and skin moisturized. When adolescents go through puberty, the sebaceous glands enlarge and make more sebum. When sebum mixes with the skin cells, whiel being sloughed off from the hair follicle, it sticks to the follicle instead of flowing outwards and acne may form. Acne also forms from the sebaceous gland producing sebum, which is why acne is common in adolescence, and when more skin cells are seen at the top pf the pore instead of the bottom.

2. Closed Comedones Stay White

White heads are a type of acne known as comedones, which are a plug of sebaceous and dead skin that become stuck in a hair follicle. Comedones can be open or closed. Whiteheads are closed comedones because they have only a small opening to the skin's surface. Since the air cannot fully reach the hair follicle, the material doesn't oxidize and so remains white.

3. Make Whiteheads Disappear

Any number of traditional acne medications will help remove whiteheads. Benzoyl Peroxide is a common component of over the counter acne medications. It works as an anti-bacterial agent and may help in reducing the chemical reaction that causes the hair follicle to create a comedone to begin with. Benzoyl peroxide works well for mild cases of comedones. You may need prescription medications, such as Retin-A or antibiotics, for more severe cases of comedones or other acne.

4. Prevent Them Before They Form

The best way to prevent whiteheads from forming is to have a consistent skin cleaning regiment. Cleanse the face twice a day with a mild soap or a facial scrub that will slough off dead skin cells and sebum. For women, don't use an oil-based makeup since this can contribute to oil build up in the follicles. There is water-based makeup, listed as anit-comedongeinc, that is safe to use.

5. Natural Remedies for Whiteheads

There are a number of natural remedies designed to remove acne or prevent it from forming. Most require a homemade paste made from fruits, cornstarch, milk and water that you apply to the face. One of the more common natural remedies involves placing a warm towel over one's face or steaming the face for 1 to 2 minutes, which softens the whitehead up and brings it to the surface and then extracting the whitehead by gently pressing them out.
