1. Wash Your Face to Prevent Blackheads

Blackheads (open comedones) are enlarged pores filled with excess oil and dead skin. Sound daily hygiene can prevent these blemishes from occurring. Washing your face every morning and evening will decrease oil and remove any dirt and debris that can lodge in your pores to cause blackheads, pimples and other acne problems. Use a cleanser that contains benzyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid. These help remove the dead skin that causes blackheads.

2. Exfoliate Frequently

Use a gentle face scrub to exfoliate your skin two or three times a week. You can also use a gentle loofah sponge (the kind made for your face, not for your elbows and knees) to remove dead skin. Regular exfoliation can prevent blackheads and make your complexion softer and smoother. However, don't exfoliate excessively, or you may dry out your skin, which in turn may cause your complexion to produce more oil (sebum).

3. Limit Your Makeup

Applying a thick foundation, especially one that contains oil, is a sure way to clog pores and bring on blackheads and pimples. Instead, opt for an oil-free, tinted moisturizer that won't block your pores. Better yet, skip the makeup altogether when you are home or just relaxing. It will give your complexion a much needed break.

4. Keep Your Hair Out of Your Face

Hair that is coated in mousse, hairspray or gel can irritate skin and cause acne. If you have long hair, wear it pulled away from your face, especially if you apply oily serums to your locks. The same idea applies to your hands, which may be greasy and oily, especially after eating. Avoid excessively touching your face. The debris from your fingers can irritate pores and cause blackheads.

5. Visit a Dermatologist

If your blackheads resist all the remedies you try, visit a dermatologist. He can study your complexion, and then recommend products for your skin type which will reduce and prevent pimples and blackheads. If you already suffer from blackheads, a dermatologist can extract them for you.
