1. Keep It Cool

Most bruises, even ones sustained in sports injuries from rough contact games like football and rugby, fade on their own with time. If you've incurred a large bruise to your leg or back, however, apply a cold compress or ice cubes packed in a towel to the affected area for 20 to 30 minutes. A bag of frozen peas works when applied to a smaller bruise, providing proof that vegetables are good for you in more ways than you ever imagined. After a few days, start exercising the area gently, and apply a heating pad if the area still feels tender to the touch.

2. Up in the Air

If you've bruised your leg, elevate it as often as possible the first day. Don't drink alcohol or take hot showers or baths the first 24 hours either. Elevate the leg occasionally the next few days, or until swelling subsides and the bruise changes color, usually from purple to yellow, then to a brownish gray as it fades completely.

3. Wrap It Up

If the bruised areas swells, wrap it with an Ace bandage before elevating it. Check the skin occasionally to make sure the bandage isn't too tight. See your doctor if the swelling doesn't subside after three days.

4. Fade the Natural Way

Some homeopathy suppliers offer special bruise lightening ointments and creams. While a nice touch, most bruises heal by themselves without special lotions or ointments. If you want to buy an ointment to fade your bruise, try one that contains arnica. Derived from a plant belonging to the sunflower family, it fades bruises and soothes the underlying muscles. Vitamin K cream, available at your local drugstore, nourishes and fades bruised skin. Hypericum (St. John's Wort) ointment works just as well when applied directly on the bruised areas. Other topical ointment ingredients used to treat bruises include grapeseed, rosemary and lavender.

5. Vitamins That Heal

Take zinc and Vitamin C every day to increase your body's healing ability, along with a good multi-vitamin. Eat leafy green vegetables, fruits and legumes. If you're a meat-eater, indulge in a steak or roast beef sandwich to increase your strength. Take special care to eat a well-balanced diet when healing from a sports-related bruise. This increases the chance of the bruise healing quickly.
