1. You are not Alone

Millions of people have pimples. It's a fact. Acne is one of the most common skin problems, especially among teenagers. You may not have breakouts not only on your face--but your back, neck, chest and shoulders, too. Acne usually affects people between 12 and 25 years old. We're not just talking physically--but also mentally. Let's face it--acne can be a devastating problem. But, it's one that you will get over. You will outgrow it and have clearer skin.

2. Acne Treatments Fill Store Shelves

If you don't want a lasting reminder of your teenage years, you've got to get your acne under control. There are stages of acne--from minimal to severe. Treating your breakouts will prevent more breakouts, treat acne scars and prevent news ones from forming. Try over-the-counter cleansers and treatments to prevent pimples. Most brands contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Another option is retinoids to apply to your complexion; they contain Differin, Retin-A or Tazorac.

3. Prescriptions may be the Answer

If you're coping with moderate to severe acne, make an appointment to see a dermatologist. They can give you stronger medication to help clear up your complexion. In many cases, dermatologists prescribe antibiotics in lotion, cream or gel form. Make sure you apply it all over the area where you're prone to breakouts. Tell your doctor if it doesn't work; she can give you an antibiotic pill to try instead.

4. Leave Pimples Alone

No, that doesn't mean not to treat them. That means you shouldn't squeeze pimples. Think of a pimple as an inflammation. When you aggravate it, you can cause an infection. Imagine how that will look on your complexion. Pimples will go away in a few days or weeks if you leave them alone. That being said, the only time you should gently squeeze a pimple is if it's head is filled with yellow pus. Usually, it will just take a tiny squeeze to get the pus out. The pimple should then heal quickly.

5. Be Aware of What Triggers Acne Breakouts

Makeup, sweat and stress can all lead to more pimples. Depending on your skin type, oily cosmetics can take a toll on your complexion. Choose oil-free, non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic makeups. Try to make a point to wash your face as soon as possible after you sweat, too, because sweat leads to breakouts. Next time you're stressing out about something, take a minute to put it into perspective. If you stress too much, it'll show in your complexion. Additionally, over-cleansing your skin can actually be a bad thing. Acne isn't caused by dirt. Scrubbing too much will only lead to more pimples.
